For the past several years, Melissa Manning has been a cornerstone of the NRO Art Exhibition, dedicating her time as a volunteer to showcase the diverse artistic talents across our workforce. Her behind-the-scenes work helps transform the annual exhibition into a museum-quality event that has become a workforce favorite.

 

Building Community Through Art

Manning’s role extends far beyond simple logistics. Working alongside fellow volunteers, she spends weekends carefully curating artwork displays, ensuring each panel tells its own visual story. “We try to be very intentional about how we put some of the pieces together to try to spread out some of the different mediums
and the different artists,” Manning explains in the recent NRO Focal Point video, “Around the NRO: The Artists of Reconnaissance.”

 

The exhibition, now celebrating its 10th year, has evolved into an inclusive platform where employees at all skill levels can share their creative work. For many participants, it marks the first time their art has been displayed in a formal
exhibition setting.

 

The Impact of Volunteerism

What drives Manning and her fellow volunteers year after year? “The reaction
and the incredibly positive feedback we get from the workforce,” she says.
The exhibition creates opportunities for colleagues to connect over shared interests beyond their daily work, revealing the passions and talents that bring people satisfaction and purpose. Manning’s commitment exemplifies how individual initiative can strengthen workplace culture and build lasting connections across the organization. Through her volunteer efforts, she helps ensure that every employee can share their creative voice with the NRO community.
